Designing A Preview / Review Game
by Kevin Eikenberry

Background

Once you've decided you want to build or adapt a game format for your learning session, this job aid can help you in planning, design and implementation. The job aid will follow the "ODD" Format -
Outcomes, Design and Debriefing. This process works equally well for designing Previews for learning as well as for reviews of content learned.

How to Use

This tool is designed for you to USE. After each question or question set, there is space for you to write your notes, thoughts, or answers. If you work all the way through the tool, you should have one or more new games built for your learning session. Page two and beyond is your workspace. Use it and print your work if needed.

Your Games!

We'd like to feature your game designs on our website! If you have designed a preview or review with this tool, or using any other method, send an email kevin@KevinEikenberry.com. We'd like to have you write up your game, and share it on our website. We will give you full recognition (of course) and provide a link to your company site and your email as well.

Questions?

If you have questions, comments or ideas about this job aid - call 1.888.LEARNER and ask for Kevin, or email kevin@KevinEikenberry.com. We'd love to hear from you!

Topic/Name of Learning Session:___________________________________

Outcomes -What am I trying to accomplish with this game?

  • What type of learning will be learned? (Attitudes, skills, or knowledge?)
  • Do I want to design a content preview, or a review?
  • Do I want to use the same activity for both preview and review?
  • Do I require, or desire, an individual preview/review, or is a team exercise suitable?
  • Am I teaching a procedure, where correct order is important?
  • Is speed of recall important?
  • Are people allowed to use their reference material back on the job? (So, can they use it during this game?)
  • Is observation of the skills back on the job important? If so, how can I incorporate that into the game?

Design Considerations

  • Does the organizational culture of the learners suggest more or less structure, competition or "fun"?
  • Does the specific audience or the content suggest more or less competition?
  • How much planning time do I have?
  • Are there other resource constraints (money, space, learning time)?
  • Do I want a preview or review, or both?
  • How much learning time can be devoted to this game?
  • Is this review designed as a total recap of the workshop or mid-course review?
  • Is there a theme in the workshop? Can you pull that theme through the review game as well?

Debriefing Plans

  • Do I want to include prizes for the winners? If so, what? How will I award them or determine the winner(s)?
  • What is my plan to debrief the content and the process? (If you don't have one yet, document it here - now! Remember, the debrief is a key part of the learning process.)
  • What are the key concepts I want to make sure are discussed? (This is a good place to make this list!)
  • How will I make sure they are mentioned if the game doesn't surface them?
