This graph was displayed in this weeks'
Kiplinger Letter . You can see from my scan that I circled it - recognizing how important this information is.
For most people this won't be that big of a shock - we know that the baby boomers are getting older. What might be a shock is how big this is (1 in 5 Government workers over 55?) and how pervasive - affecting all sorts of industries and organizations.
Most people talk about these sorts of figures and talk about the coming shortage of leaders - and these numbers certainly lead us to that conclusion - a larger percentage of the the older folks are probably in the leadership positions. Yes, on a national (and western world) scale, there will be shortages.
But the shortages don't have to impact you and your organization, but you likely still have time. . .
- time to identify future leaders.
- time to build ways for your more senior folks to mentor the future leaders.
- time to provide future leaders opportunities to lead projects or take other developmental assignments.
- time to build an effective leadership development process.
In other words, time to change the the fortunes and futures of your organization, regardless of the macro trend.
But the time to take action is now - before the gray wave catches you in the undertow.
