Kevin’s Answer:
Consultants can have many job titles. Accountant, lawyer, salesperson, realtor, trainer, Human Resources Specialist, and engineer are just a few of the jobs in which people are consultants.
If you have a subject expertise that you share with others, if you provide input and guidance without the ability to make the final decision, if you provide counsel that others apply to their situations, then you are a consultant.
Consultants can play an extremely valuable role both internal to organizations and externally as well. When you realize that in fact, you are a consultant, then you can begin to look at your role in a slightly different way. Thinking of yourself as a consultant allows you to focus on more than just your expertise, but on your ability to influence and help your client (whether internal or external) be more successful with the help of your expertise.
