Kevin's Answers
You asked:
"What are the key Facilitation Skills?"
Kevin’s Answer:
Being a great facilitator, like mastering any other meaningful skill, takes time and practice. It is important to know, though, what to practice! There are both processes and interpersonal skills required to be an effective facilitator.
From a process perspective, one needs a variety of skills including how to use:
- Ground rules
- Brainstorming Techniques
- Clarification and narrowing techniques
- Consensus Building
- Intervention Skills
Beyond these techniques, effective facilitators are interpersonally mature. They are able to:
- Listen effectively and empathetically
- Paraphrase key points
- Remain neutral, focusing on the group's needs
- Ask effective questions
- Recognize the emotions surrounding a topic - both personally and for the group
- Communicate clearly and effectively
- Remain non-judgmental
While some people have natural gifts that enable them to facilitate groups more easily, anyone can become effective, with the right skills, knowledge and practice. Our Facilitation Skills Workshops and Consulting Skills Workshops are two ways to get started on the road to better facilitation skills.
