Learning Styles
It's okay to be redundant. To insist that it's not is a defensive posture. We have
a perfectly good manual. It's all there if you'll just look for it. The phrase that should
run through your mind is "in other words." When you experience some frustration
at not being able to communicate an idea to someone else, don't stubbornly repeat yourself
in a voice that gets louder and rises in pitch. Instead, try to communicate the same idea
in a different way. Use different words and try to say the same thing. Perhaps the new set
of words will mean more to the receiver. (Richard Saul Wurman, Follow the Yellow
Brick Road)
According to Randy Vest, dean of Hamburger U (McDonald's), one of the challenges of
their training program is "learning how to deal with cultural diversity and how
to reach people as individuals by figuring out their differences. What do they need in the
way of training and how do they prefer to learn? We try to be observant and gather facts
from watching people at work. In this way we learn to separate fact from
assumptions."
