Passion
When people genuinely care, they are naturally committed. They are doing what they
truly want to do. They are full of energy and enthusiasm. They persevere, even in the face
of frustration and setbacks, because what they are doing is what they must do. It is their
work. (Peter Senge, The Fifth Discipline)
In almost any subject your passion for the subject will save you. If you only care
enough for a result, you will almost certainly attain it. If you wish to be rich, you will
be rich; if you wish to be learned, you will be learned; if you wish to be good, you will
be good. Only you must, then, really wish these things, and wish them with exclusiveness,
and not wish at the same time a hundred other incompatible things just as strongly.
(William
James, Talks to Teacher)
I heard a story once about the late Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame. He
was on an airplane and a young infant was screaming loudly and incessantly. Nothing would
quiet the youngster. The mother and the flight attendants tried all their tricks to no
avail. Finally, the Colonel asked if he could hold the baby. He picked it up, cradled and
rocked it, and the child soon went peacefully to sleep. When he returned to his seat, a
nearby passenger graciously thanked him. "We all appreciate what you did for
us." The Colonel said, "I didn't do it for us. I did it for the
baby."
Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste,
it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take
alms of those who work with joy. (Kahlil Gibram)
No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning
as fear. (Edmund Burke)
The core leadership strategy is simple: be a model. Commit yourself to your own
personal mastery. Talking about personal mastery may open people's minds somewhat, but
actions always speak louder than words. There's nothing more powerful you can do to
encourage others in their quest for personal mastery than to be serious in your own quest.
(Peter Senge, The Fifth Discipline)
