You asked:
"I held a brainstorming session for a team to work on overcoming barriers to help the facility grow. It was met with lots of negativity. They quoted longevity as one of their strengths (employees with 10, 20 and even 30 years of experience) yet all of the long-term employees confessed to major burnout. They have been through years of company and management changes. What can I do, if anything, to light their fire again? (I have no control over pay increases, insurance benefits, etc.)"
Kevin’s Answer:
I have some bad news. You can’t light their fire. People light their own fires. You can, however provide a match and put it in their hand!
If people have been there a long time, living through a variety of ownership and management changes, they’ve stayed for a reason. One of the most powerful things you can do is help them remember why they have been so loyal.
Ask them to make a list of reasons why they have stayed so long. Give them time to write their own lists then ask the group to share with each other. Record the reasons on a flipchart for everyone to see. Use this as a springboard for further conversation about why they have been proud to be employed there and what would make them prouder (or proud again). This new perspective has a good chance of helping you turn around the negativity and helping people work through their own burnout issues.
Remain in the facilitator role and be ready to hand out matches.
