Kevin’s Answer:
It isn’t as hard as it might sound. Remember that these are interrelated and complimentary skills. Good coaches teach. Good teachers coach. Rather than worrying about which you “should be doing” instead focus solely on the need of the person you are working with.
Do they lack some fundamental skill or knowledge in order to succeed? Do you have these skills and knowledge? If so, teach them! If not, help them find the resources to learn those things.
If they need help in applying what they know, then coaching is the prominent need. Provide them with counsel, advice, the benefit of your experiences, encouragement, and more.
Again, don’t worry about whether to coach or teach. Do both at the right times.
